Product Design

I’m not lying when I say that I was tricked into product design but regardless of the paths I’ve taken, I’ve at least tried to make the best of it. Here are some fine examples of a time when I worried about how round to make the corners of buttons.

Why I included it in my portfolio of work:
I’m not sure really. I spent a lot of time learning Sketch, Figma, inVision and 90 other applications that make rounded buttons so I might as well show off some of the things I made.

Booking travel and accommodations within the government is very labor intensive; we wanted to fix that. For this project, my team improved the customer experience by creating new branding as well as revamped the entire online process. We began by providing users with a “Quick Book” option where the system suggested travel options based on policy and preferences to shortcut the full booking process; User design elements were created to make compliant choices obvious and apparent.

We increased the amount of information that could be auto-filled by the system based on previous trips or other available data in the system. We used plain language to reduce the need for explanations and walkthroughs from the program. Utilizing some amazing design talent and UX pros, we were able to cut booking time from ~45 minutes to five. It was an impressive improvement, especially on government time.

GTSS Academy

Under the CDC, the Global Tobacco Surveillance System (GTSS) aims to support global communities in their evaluation of tobacco usage and includes over 20 tobacco data topics including, tobacco use, tobacco advertising, cessation, secondhand smoke, school policies, and perceptions of smoking behaviors. GTSS includes the collection of data through four surveys: the Global Youth Tobacco Survey (GYTS); Global School Personnel Survey (GSPS); Global Health Professions Student Survey (GHPSS) and Global Adult Tobacco Survey (GATS). GYTS focuses on youth aged 13-15 and collects information in schools. GSPS surveys teachers and administrators from the same schools that participate in the GYTS. GHPSS focuses on 3rd year students pursuing degrees in dentistry, medicine, nursing and pharmacy. GATS is a nationally representative household survey that monitors tobacco use among adults aged 15 years and older. That is a lot of raw data.

With a small yet nimble team, we set out to make it easier for site visitors to navigate through the mountains of data in an intuitive, yet simple and elegant way. Over the course of four months, I was tasked with modernizing GTSS in it’s entirety; this consisted of a new logomark, branding and styling system, as well as a completely redesigned web presence.
